Seeking Spirit in the World

These paintings began in the landscape, in the Brandywine Valley light I know by heart, but they resolved somewhere else. In memory, in intuition, in the slow accumulation of looking and feeling until the seen world gives way to something less nameable.

This body of work, begun in 2025, moves between warmth and cool, between dense immersion and open glow. Some paintings start with color. One began with a drawing and never stopped being one. What connects them is a search for the spirit held inside our everyday surroundings, the light inside tangled branches, the shift in atmosphere from afternoon to evening.

The process is layered: acrylic ground built upon with oil glazes that deepen and complicate the surface, drawing that sometimes asserts itself through the paint. Each painting teaches me what it needs, and I follow.

Selections from this portfolio were exhibited in Seeking Spirit in the World at McNichol Gallery, Neumann University (January–March 2026). Some of these pieces will be shown aalongside others from other series in Moving Deeper into Light at baby grand Gallery, Grand Opera House, Wilmington, DE, May 1–31, 2026.
