Portfolio of Light and Darkness
The work in this series draw from the deep and rich palette of emotive power, contrasting light and color to call forth the transcendence of light and the fragility of form. In many paintings of this series I use a blending of dark umber and prussian blue to create a tonal “black” that is an exploration of depth and richness of color, rather than absence of color.
Each piece examines the relationship between dark and light, between shadow and reflection, between inner quiet light and outer brash light. As such, the paintings honor what cannot be relayed in words: exploring the immaterial realm, infinity, and formlessness, and creating a still point within an ever-changing world.
They invite the viewer to connect with and experience their own inner emotions as they present a visual metaphor of our shared “beingness”, and invite us to experience the transitory nature of life via the constancy of the great sweet darkness and warming light, to which we are continually drawn, and from which we continually move away.

Night Light 2022 "Night Light" (30 x 30") explores luminosity in darkness—that mysterious glow that appears after sunset, whether moonlight on water, bioluminescence in the deep, or the reassuring presence of light keeping vigil through the night. Working with oil on canvas, I built up deep passages of indigo and midnight blue punctuated by a vertical column of brilliant cyan and white light. The painting suggests looking into nocturnal depths—perhaps underwater, where unknown things glow, perhaps into the night sky where light travels through darkness, or simply acknowledging how light transforms the night. The title works on multiple levels: light that appears at night (moon, stars, phosphorescence) and also the comforting presence of a night light—that small beacon that makes darkness navigable, less frightening, more beautiful. The gestural brushwork creates movement around the central luminosity, as if darkness itself swirls around light, defining it, making it precious. This is a painting about what shines through, what persists, what illuminates even when everything else goes dark. Professional-grade oil on canvas. Edges painted, ready to hang. Signed on the back. Surfacing 2022 Oil painting referencing light reflected on the surface of water at night "Surfacing" (20 x 20") captures that liminal moment between below and above—when what has been submerged rises toward light, when hidden things emerge, when the boundary between depths and air becomes permeable.Working with oil on canvas, I built up deep passages of midnight blue and navy punctuated by luminous areas where light reflects on water's surface at night. The painting suggests looking up from underwater toward that glimmering boundary, or perhaps looking down at water where moonlight catches the constantly shifting plane between liquid and air. Vertical passages drip downward like water streams or upward like bubbles rising."Surfacing" works as both physical description and metaphor. What has been hidden beneath comes to light. What has been held down breaks through. The night setting adds mystery—we don't fully see what surfaces, only sense its emergence through disrupted light. This is a painting about revelation, about the moment before something becomes fully known, when it's still half in darkness, half in light. Professional-grade oil on canvas. Edges painted, ready to hang. Signed on the back. Certificate included. Size in inches: 20 x 20" Size in cm: 50.8 x 50.8 cm
Promise 2022 "Promise" (11 x 14") explores what persists in darkness—that small certainty of light returning, of dawn following night, of hope maintaining presence even when circumstances suggest otherwise. This intimate painting embodies promise as both noun and verb: the commitment made and the potential inherent in every moment. Working with oil on canvas, I built up deep passages of midnight blue and black punctuated by a luminous opening where pale blues, whites, and touches of coral suggest light breaking through. The painting reads simultaneously as nocturnal sky where dawn approaches, as underwater depths where something glows, or simply as darkness itself acknowledging that it cannot be permanent. Promise is fragile but persistent. It doesn't demand immediate fulfillment—it simply exists, that small flame of possibility that survives even the longest night. The small 11 x 14" format creates intimacy, inviting you to lean in and discover the delicate colors hidden within what first appears as simple darkness. Professional-grade oil on canvas. Signed on back. Certificate included. Size in inches 11x 14" Size in cm: 27.9 x 35.6 cm
