"Promise" (11 x 14") explores what persists in darkness—that small certainty of light returning, of dawn following night, of hope maintaining presence even when circumstances suggest otherwise. This intimate painting embodies promise as both noun and verb: the commitment made and the potential inherent in every moment.
Working with oil on canvas, I built up deep passages of midnight blue and black punctuated by a luminous opening where pale blues, whites, and touches of coral suggest light breaking through. The painting reads simultaneously as nocturnal sky where dawn approaches, as underwater depths where something glows, or simply as darkness itself acknowledging that it cannot be permanent.
Promise is fragile but persistent. It doesn't demand immediate fulfillment—it simply exists, that small flame of possibility that survives even the longest night. The small 11 x 14" format creates intimacy, inviting you to lean in and discover the delicate colors hidden within what first appears as simple darkness.
