Listening to Starlight
Oil on Canvas
Size in inches: 36 x 48" Size in cm: 91.4 x 121.9 cm

LISTENING TO STARLIGHT invites you into a profound meditation on receptivity, wonder, and our connection to the cosmos. This luminous 36x48 inch vertical canvas captures what it means to truly listen—not with ears, but with the soul—to the ancient light traveling across vast distances to reach us.
The painting evokes the depth and mystery of the night sky, but this is no literal representation. Instead, it channels the feeling of standing beneath infinite stars, of sensing the universe speaking in a language older than words. Rich, complex layers of color create a cosmic field that seems to pulse with hidden energy and quiet revelation.
Deep burgundy and wine reds anchor the composition, suggesting the mysterious depth of space and the warmth of cosmic dust. These earth-toned passages are illuminated by swirls of golden yellow and chartreuse—starlight itself, captured in paint. Celestial blues range from deep cobalt to bright turquoise and sky blue, creating luminous pathways through the darkness like nebulae glowing with their own inner light. Touches of burnt sienna, forest green, and olive add complexity and organic warmth.
Throughout the canvas, small white marks sparkle like distant stars—some bright and clear, others diffused and mysterious. These points of light don't simply sit on the surface; they emerge from within the layered depths, creating a sense of infinite distance and dimensionality. The overall effect is of gazing into deep space where light, color, and energy swirl in eternal cosmic dance.
The vertical format enhances the sense of looking upward into vastness, of standing small beneath something incomprehensibly grand. Yet the painting's invitation is intimate—to listen, to receive, to open oneself to wonder. It embodies the paradox of feeling both humbled by cosmic scale and deeply connected to something infinite.
Created over a five-year period (2017-2022), this work carries the depth that comes from extended meditation and contemplation. The layered surface shows the history of its own creation—passages where paint was applied, reconsidered, built upon, creating rich textural complexity that rewards sustained viewing. Each layer represents a different moment of listening, a different quality of light received and translated into color.
