Breathe/Veils" (48 x 60") from the Breathing Series explores breath's layered nature—how lungs themselves are veils between air and blood, how each breath passes through multiple membranes, how breathing involves countless translucent barriers that separate and connect simultaneously.
Working with oil on canvas, I built up four lung-like forms in delicate, translucent passages of pale green, blue, cream, and lavender. The painting's structure evokes both lungs and the quatrefoil shape found in sacred architecture—four lobes radiating from a central axis. Unlike the dramatic swirls elsewhere in this series, here breath becomes visible as layered veils, semi-transparent membranes through which life passes.
"Veils" captures multiple meanings: the alveoli that veil oxygen from bloodstream, the thin barrier between life and death that breath maintains, the layers of awareness breath can penetrate in meditation. Each inhalation passes through countless veils—nasal passages, bronchi, alveoli—each one both barrier and gateway. This painting honors those delicate structures that make breathing possible.
