"Breathe/Inspire Respire" (48 x 60") from the Breathing Series explores the profound connection between breath and inspiration—how the physical act of breathing (respire) becomes the vehicle for creative and spiritual awakening (inspire). The title plays on etymology: "inspire" literally means "to breathe in," linking physical and metaphorical illumination.
Working with oil glazing over acrylic underpainting, I built up dramatic swirling passages of burgundy, crimson, and deep blue that spiral outward from a central axis. Unlike the lighter palettes elsewhere in this series, here the colors intensify into wine-dark depths punctuated by white light. The cyclonic movement suggests the moment when ordinary breath becomes something more—when inhalation brings not just oxygen but insight, creativity, divine spark.
This painting embodies breath as muse, as the physical foundation of inspiration itself. Every artist, writer, or seeker knows that creative flow requires conscious breathing. This work honors that connection: respiration as the ground from which inspiration rises, breath as the bridge between body and spirit.
