"Breathe/Air" (48 x 60") from the Breathing Series explores breath as tangible substance—the medium we move through, the atmosphere that carries scent, dust, warmth, and life itself. This painting embodies air not as empty space but as rich, textured presence.
Working with oil glazing over acrylic underpainting, I built up swirling passages of gold, amber, and earth tones interwoven with blues and teals. Unlike the cooler "Breathe/Energy" or luminous "Breathe/Light," this painting emphasizes air's physicality—you can almost feel it moving, sense its weight and warmth. The brushwork creates cyclonic movement, suggesting wind currents, thermal updrafts, the invisible architecture of atmosphere made visible.
This painting acknowledges that air isn't neutral or empty—it carries everything: moisture, pollen, particles of the world, breath of others, history. Each inhalation brings this complexity into our bodies. The warm palette suggests afternoon air, desert wind, or simply the richness of atmosphere when we pay attention to what we're actually breathing.
The large horizontal format emphasizes the body moving through air, air moving through the body.
Professional-grade oil on canvas. Edges painted, ready to hang. Signed on back. Certificate included.
